When Islamaphobia occurs, we might not know how to cope with what has happened and what to do next. Join us tonight at 8 PM EDT to discuss […]

8 Ways Muslim Americans Can Support The #BlackLivesMatter Movement

8 Ways Muslim Americans Can Support The #BlackLivesMatter Movement

Before beginning to list out the action items the Muslim American community can take, let’s discuss why it’s important. First, justice is at the very core of Islam. In the Quran God says: “God commands justice and fair dealing…” (Quran 16:90) and “O you who believe, be upright for God, and (be) bearers of witness […]

5 Steps White People (Myself Included) Can Take In Response To Systemic Racism

5 Steps White People (Myself Included) Can Take In Response To Systemic Racism

The recent events that have occurred are not just about police brutality against people in the black community. If so, it might be easy to distance oneself and think that the problem lies with a small number of very bad cops “out there”, and justice simply needs to be served. Instead, these recent events are […]

Best Toys For 2021: 20 Games & Toy For Kids

Best Toys For 2021: 20 Games & Toy For Kids

Working out which are the best toys isn’t often a job for grown-ups. We can’t just turn around and give the kids some old Skeletor action figures and dusty Stickle Bricks and expect them to be happy. But that’s okay: T3’s youth contingent has been drafted in (er, all above board when it comes to […]

A Seven-Step Prescription For Self-Love

A Seven-Step Prescription For Self-Love

Self-love is a popular term today that gets tossed around in normal conversation: “You have to love yourself more.” “Why don’t you love yourself?” “If you only loved yourself, this wouldn’t have happened to you.” “You can’t love another person until you love yourself first.” These are just a few of the self-love directives we […]

How Many Hours Of Sleep Do Teens Really Need?

How Many Hours Of Sleep Do Teens Really Need?

Do you have trouble rousing your teen out of bed in the morning? Contrary to popular belief, it’s not teenage angst that’s making them resist facing the day. Zakat eligibility of The FYI

The Family & Youth Institute, or The FYI, is a well-known Muslim organization in the United States. It works to promote mental health and wellness by strengthening and empowering individuals, families, and communities through research and education. It has been working for many years to bring Islamic perspectives to understanding and promoting mental health in our communities.

It is dedicated to serving and supporting Muslims – safeguarding our deen, our families, and our future generations. Therefore, the work of The FYI comes in the category of ‘fi sabeelillah’ or the Path of Allah, within the eight categories where Zakat money can be used.

Zakah expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed for it and for bringing hearts together [for Islam] and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah, and for the [stranded] traveler – an obligation [imposed] by Allah, And Allah, is Knowing and Wise.”
(Al-Tawbah 9:60)

According to scholars who widen the meaning of fee sabeelillah to include any activities that promote Islamic growth, The FYI is indeed eligible to receive part of the Zakat funds for its programs and services. I urge Muslims in America to support this organization through their donations, general charity, and through their Zakat. I ask Allah swt to strengthen and guide The FYI to continue its good work in supporting Muslims.
