The Family and Youth Institute (The FYI) is a national research and education institute focusing on Muslim mental health and family wellness. We provide solutions for mental health and family issues impacting Muslim Americans through research and developing data-driven, religiously and culturally appropriate solutions.

We are seeking bright, creative, passionate self-starters to join The FYI internship program. During this internship program you will be able to make an impact on the Muslim American community as well as having the opportunity to learn alongside talented, dedicated professionals in a fun, collaborative, and mission-driven environment. We are committed to making internships as fulfilling as possible and— helping you learn and grow as a professional. Internship positions are part-time, virtual, with flexible hours, and stipend included. The internship begins August 21st  and requires a 1 year commitment.

Past interns have developed marketing campaigns, conducted hands-on, in-depth clinical research and data analysis, helped produce academic books and reports, organizational intervention, videos, toolkits, presented at conferences, as well as developed meaningful relationships with their team mentor. The FYI is dedicated to making this internship impactful and an important milestone in each intern’s professional development.

The FYI invites exceptional undergraduate and graduate students from diverse educational backgrounds and a strong desire to promote Muslim American mental health and family well-being. Interns must exhibit professionalism and attention to detail, as well as strong team-work, organizational, and communication skills. The FYI is looking for interns for the following roles: 

  • Write engaging long-form copy and creative and captivating short-form copy
  • Research relevant hashtags and keywords to use for the given topic
  • Ensure brand voice is consistent across all copy
  • Experience writing copy in the fields of mental health, research, and the non-profit industry
  • Include 3-5 writing samples, including both long-form and short-form copy
  • Create visually appealing social media posts, print material, video, and other marketing and website content while balancing current design trends, The FYI brand, and current best practices in marketing.
  • Assist in the development of templates for flyers, banners, and other marketing needs
  • Experience creating content in the fields of mental health, research, and the non-profit industry
  • Include 3-5 design/video samples
  • Create ads on Facebook/Instagram, Google/Youtube, as well as other platforms as needed
  • Analyze data relevant to marketing, including website traffic data using GA4, ad results, email data, social media data, and results from experiments and tests
  • Create reports on marketing performance and experimentation in a way that is accessible to members of the team without a background in data or marketing
  • Coaching on best practices in marketing and translating data to a lay audience
  • Include any samples of data analysis/reports and/or digital ads
  • Craft strategic plans to market FYI courses, workshops, merch, and other products
  • Collaborate with Marketing and Resource Development teams to identify needs and ensure smooth execution of marketing plans
  • Conduct market research to identify trends, opportunities, strengths, and weaknesses
  • Experience marketing products within the fields of mental health, research, and the non-profit industry
  • Include any samples of original marketing content, strategies, or plans
  • Gain valuable hands-on experience in research.
  • Possess foundational research skills (i.e., literature reviews, etc.)
  • Conduct primary research (focus groups, surveys/questionnaires) and secondary research (i.e., literature reviews)
  • Utilize strong academic/research writing skills to synthesize and create summaries of findings
  • Applications must include an academic writing sample
  • • Envision and help design practical, research-backed resources related to parenting, family, marriage, youth and mental health topics. 
  • • Write copy for engaging, professional content like reels, blog posts, graphics and more from primary and secondary research. 
  • Transform research findings into usable, practical guides like articles, infographics, video scripts, etc.
  • Understand The FYI’s communication style and brand to ensure consistency in content creation  
  • Journalism background preferred
  • Applications must include a professional writing sample as well as any samples of content creation
  • Assist in donor management using CRM platform
  • Conduct development research for projects, prospects, and initiatives 
  • Steward donors through strong and responsive communication
  • Prepare correspondence, reports, proposals and donor appeals
  • Support organization-wide development effort
  • Applications must include an academic/professional writing sample
  • Assisting in the Maintenance of The FYI Community Facebook Group (moderating, accepting posts, ensuring posts and comments are appropriate)
  • • Work on Quarterly Projects focused on: Empowering Muslim communities across the nation with research based workshops. Integrating innovative programming ideas and resources into workshops and presentations.
  • Talent Search (Finding experts to join our team, for speaker trainings, and retreat)
  • Curating potential organizations we could work/partner with in regards to our yearly tracks
  • Providing administrative support to the Community Engagement Officer
  • Enhance organizations operations, organizational development, human resources training
  • Analyzing all operations and forwarding suggestions for improvement to the Manager.
  • Assisting in operational issues.
  • Assist in scheduling meetings and team building sessions as required.
  • Updating, preparing and filing forms, logs, and other documents.
  • Assisting with recruitment and onboarding processes.
  • Minor accounting.
  • Assist in gathering data on communities and organizations in North America
  • Identify and participate in meeting possible community partnerships
  • Maintain relationships with current partnerships
  • Assist with administrative duties

The Details

  • Applications Due By: May 31st
  • Application Review & Interviews –  May 31st – July 14th
  • Internship Begins/Orientation – August 21 (About 10 hours a week, About 450 hours at the end of the internship)

  • Interns are expected to maintain a professional attitude and work ethic at all times. 
  • Intern time is divided into blocks of fixed and flexible hours 
  • Interns meet weekly with mentors and have monthly training sessions.
  • Stipend $2000 paid in 2 payments 

*Interns must be able to meet with their mentors weekly and attend an interns team meeting monthly during business hours*
